Last Sunday I made the short trip to Gryffidam, Near Coalville to contest in the Coalville Wheeler’s Road Race. Having rode this race and the coarse a few times now before, I knew it was going to be a hard race and to expect a tough day on what is not the easiest course with a very tough finish.
A quality field ensured a fast race from the off and a break started to establish after a couple of laps with nothing truly sticking with the break only keeping a short lead. Just before coming on to the fourth lap however there was a crash just before the finishing climb which held up a lot of the bunch including myself with many riders having to dismount. This meant there was a hard chase back on to the bunch.
Following this the gap to the break increased with a some more riders also making it over to make a good group. Managing to chase back on with another group I got myself back into the bunch where until the end of the race further attacks were nullified or it was to difficult to get away with the exception of two riders Adam Gascoigne and Will Corden who got away with a lap and a half to go.
With a total of eight up the road at the finish the bunch sprint was for 9th place. I managed to take 10th on the line in what was a very tough sprint after attacking on the climb before hitting the final straight to the finish.
The race was won by Rory Townsend of Bike Channel.
